East Kentucky Regional Science Fair Winners

 

 

          Which detergent makes the most bubbles?  How dirty is your money, or what are the effects of different fabric softeners on drying time?  Well, these were among the winning Science Fair projects at the 7th annual East Kentucky Regional Science Fair held Saturday April 12th at the East Kentucky Science Center on the campus of Big Sandy Community and Technical College in Prestonsburg.

Students spent the day competing in an interview competition explaining to the judges the what, when, where, why’s and how’s of their science projects. To be eligible to compete in the Regional Science Fair students must have won 1st place in their grade level at their schools Science fair.  There were 47 students from 5 counties in grades 4– 11 who represented their schools with outstanding performances.

The 1st place Science Fair winners received a trophy, a printer donated by Lexmark and a U.S. Savings Bond donated by Citizens National Bank  Schools of first place winners in each grade level also were awarded a cash prize for use in their science department.  Second  and third  place Science Fair winners received a trophy and a U.S. Savings Bond donated by Citizens National Bank.  All participants received a Science Medallion for competing.

Eighth grade students had a chance to compete for another prestigious award.  The coveted Tony Turner Award.  This award was named in honor of the late Tony Turner a beloved news anchor from WYMT TV in Hazard.  This award is given to the student who best communicates his/her project through oral, written, and visual means to the judges.  This year’s award was presented to Austen Bryce Shrewsbury from Jones Fork Elementary for his project, Water Filtration : Friend or Foe.  Austen won a printer donated by Lexmark, a Family Membership to the East Kentucky Science Center and a trip for his class to the Science Center.

Science Center Education Coordinator Shannon Arts emceed the event while Executive Director Eric Thomas handed out this year’s awards.  It was a day of good weather, good fun, and great Science.  We’ll see you at next year’s East Kentucky Regional Science Fair on March 7th 2009.
